Paper cutout by Anna Maria van Schurman

For Anna Maria van Schurman (1607-1678), her skill in paper cutting, a technique of which very few examples survive today, was just the beginning of her extraordinary life. From a young age she learned complex practices such as embroidery, and later became known as an artist, poet and linguist. She spoke many languages and strongly supported women’s right to education. Her writings and ideas were recognised internationally during her lifetime.

Yet her work was never meant for self advancement, but as an expression of a deep Christian faith and a strong moral and disciplined approach to knowledge. As she would later write, “every blade of grass teaches the presence of God.”
